This incredible environmental center in Long Beach, California is made from shipping containers discarded at the world’s second busiest port. The eCORRE COMPLEX, The Environmental Center of Regenerative Research & Education, is designed by APHIDoIDEA Architects [1] and incorporates the most recent developments in renewable energy [2], including passive design, vegetated roofs and a creative re-use of materials. In recognition of its ingenuity, the design was selected as a finalist in the AIA-LA USGBC Emerging Talent Design Competition.

The 65 shipping containers [4] are first stacked, then manipulated to create an accessible building space, and finally tilted in order to maximize solar exposure [5]. A rooftop garden features a rainwater harvesting system [6] and plants that require little irrigation — a key addition that aptly addresses California’s persistent drought state.

The Center incorporates everything that people interested in [7]sustainable building [8] need to know, while fostering a green community with a beautiful open plaza and outdoor amphitheater.
