UK company Invicta Group [2] has become the first company in the world to make food-safe products [3] from 100% recycled plastic bottles, containers, tubs and lids. Their new rPETable patented process focuses on products made using a breakthrough plastic injection moulding technology. This new approach to recycling plastic [4] ensures that no toxic additives remain in the packaging material. Among the first major brands to test the new technology are Coca-Cola, Guinness and Reckitt Benckiser.

Plastic food containers and bottles, recycled or not, can contain a number of toxic chemicals that can leach from the packaging [6] into the food or drink product itself. Among other hazardous substances is Bisphenol A (BPA) [7]- a synthetic chemical that interferes with the body’s natural hormonal system. It is commonly found in polycarbonate plastics used for storing food and has been linked to breast cancer, reproductive problems, obesity and other serious health issues.

According to Invicta Group CEO Lady Onslow, the company has tested hundreds of recycled materials sourced in the UK, Europe and the United States to find a way of making food-safe products that can be recyclable themselves. The trial stage took four years and millions of pounds of investment, resulting in a process that is cost effective and contributes to lowering carbon footprints [8].
