San Francisco 49ers’ New Home to be Pro Football’s First LEED-Certified Stadium

The Superbowl-bound San Francisco 49ers are set to move into their new Santa Clara stadium next year, and it’s set to be pro football’s first LEED certified stadium . There’s no word yet as to which level of certification the stadium is aiming for, but the facility will generate enough solar power to offset all energy consumed during home games. The stadium will feature 3 solar arrays over its bridges and a green canopy above the tower portion of the stadium and the 49ers training center.
Through partnership with NRG Energy , the Santa Clara Stadium Authority and the San Francisco 49ers are bringing sustainable energy to professional football. NRG Energy, known for its green tech projects such as EV charging station in California and wind farms in Texas, will install a number of state-of-the-art solar elements on the Santa Clara Stadium, which will provide enough energy over the course of a year to offset the power consumed during 49ers home games.
The project will include the pro football’s first green roof —a 27,000 square foot canopy covered with vegetation, which will both insulate the stadium’s luxury suites and help reduce stormwater runoff. The bridges connecting the stadium to the main parking area and the team’s training center will feature hundreds of solar panels with a capacity of 400 kilowatts.
“NRG is much more than a Founding Partner, they are providing the energy leadership, infrastructure and expertise to help us achieve the vision of making the new Santa Clara Stadium an economically and environmentally sustainable showcase for innovation,” said Jed York, San Francisco 49ers Chief Executive Officer.
NRG Energy will seek to implement other sustainable solutions as well—electric car charging stations will be installed alongside bike lanes to connect the stadium to the popular bicycle route from the city of Santa Clara. Additionally recycled materials will be utilized and water-efficient plumbing systems are to be installed.
