Gallery: Sculptural Lago Vista House in Los Angeles is Bathed in Soft N...

Aleks Istanbullu Architects has equipped a small cubed guest house in Los Angeles with a sculptural facade that blends into its verdant surroundings and provides so much natural light that the home seems to glow from the inside out. Set above a heavily-vegetated canyon in Los Angeles, the Lago Vista house is comprised of two volumes that together make up 855 square feet.

Designed to blend with the native grasses, the small zen-like home is nonetheless a striking feature of the dramatic landscape without being to overbearing. It is oriented to maximize views of the nearby canyon, which also permits all kinds of gentle natural light to suffuse the residence in an almost ethereal glow, and manages to blur the boundaries between inside and outside.

A glassed-off corner overlooking the canyon also peers over a tranquil lily pond (it hardly gets more idyllic than that) and deep recessed windows add to the program’s reflective allure. Floor to ceiling casework is indicative of how efficiently space has been used and all of these features together create a quiet, meditative and earth-friendly retreat.
