Like all data centers, Stockholm’s Interxion data center gets very hot – and the company is using seawater to keep its servers from overheating. At its Stockholm facilities, Interxion saves about $1 million per year in energy costs by using water from the Baltic Sea to cool its servers. The company pumps the seawater through several of its data centers, reusing the cool water several times to effectively bring temperatures down from over heated servers and IT equipment. After being used to cool the servers down, the water is then reused to heat homes and offices.

Brazil’s stadium Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto, or Mineirão for short, got a new rooftop solar array in preparation of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. As the tournament approaches in just one year, officials cut the ribbon on the Minas Gerais stadium’s newly minted array, which ushers in an era of greener World Cup events. The stadium joins Mané Garrincha stadium, which will have a 2.5 MWp solar array that will provide enough solar energy to power nearly half of the stadium.

Indoor farms need light—and a lot of it—to grow crops, but that energy adds up big time in terms of cost and environmental impact. A Pinkhouse is a new type of indoor farm that grows crops using pink-colored light. Rather than bathing plants with white light (which has all the colors of the spectrum), a Pinkhouse uses a mix of red and blue light. By not using all the other colors, indoor vertical farms can cut down on their power bill with low-energy LED lights that emit just the right shade of magenta.

In order to help reduce carbon emissions by 2020, the UK government recently opened the Green Investment Bank (GIB) in Edinburgh, making it the first bank in the world focused entirely on lending to clean energy developments. Capitalized with over 3 billion pounds, the GIB financed eleven projects over its first five months, the majority of which had to do with generating energy from waste. The bank reported that it was able to utilize 1.7 billion pounds of third-party lending, helping to spark a new, sustainable private sector.
