Architect Koen Olthuis of Waterstudio.nl has been fascinating the Inhabitat editors for years with his innovative floating buildings and aqua-tecture. Far from being confined by convention — or by the boundaries of dry land — Olthuis has made a name for himself as an architect who pushes the boundaries of possibility when it comes to the built environment. With a studio focused on designing floating buildings for a future water world, Waterstudio.nl has designed everything from floating apartment complexes in the Netherlands to a floating mosque in the UAE to even an entire floating community of islands for the Maldives. While we’ve spoken in depth with Koen before about flood-resistant architecture, floating buildings and what he calls ‘sustainaquality’ — in the light of the latest tragedies that have hit Japan, we have to ask: how and relevant and sound is water architecture for today’s concerns? The US Navy is set to begin pumping thousands of liters of oil from the USS Guardian ship, which ran aground on the Tubbataha Reef in the Philippines last week. The minesweeper already destroyed part of the 97,000-hectare-wide World Heritage-listed marine park in the Sulu Sea south-east of Palawan island, and the ship is said to be too damaged to simply be towed away.

Dubai is already home to some of the most architecturally stunning, advanced, and excessive buildings in the world, but the Water Discus Hotel is a showstopper – and we just received word that BIG INVEST and Deep Ocean Technology have joined forces with plans to actually build the Water Discus Hotel and possibly duplicate it around the world. Created by Polish firm Deep Ocean Technology, the design called for a pair of sci-fi styled discs, one of which would be positioned 21 stories underwater. Those lucky enough to reserve rooms in the underwater portion of  this real life Atlantis would be treated to a fish-eye view of the Persian Gulf.

As island nations around the world look for solutions to stem rising sea levels due to climate change, a new land mass has spontaneously popped out of the Red Sea. The smoking hot island is acting as a real-time geographical lesson in how volcanic oceanic islands are formed — it is bubbling above the surface due to a recently active volcano. NASA captured the rising island (shown above) from their Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) – check out an image of the spot before the volcanic eruption after the jump.

At the beginning of 2011, Dubai‘s most notorious man-made islands, a.k.a. The World, made a splash with news that they were slowly but surely sinking into the sea. Now, in a bizarre twist of events that even had us surprised (and trust us, we thought we’d seen it all when it comes to The World), Google has announced that it purchased the troubled archipelago and will be reconfiguring it to form the shape of the Google logo. While we’ve seen the search engine giant dabble in everything from green energy to self-driving cars, this is the first we’ve heard of them making their way into island real estate. Once complete, the Google-shaped landmasses will be self-sustaining floating cities, and the company reports that it plans to retain a portion of the development for its own private use and sell the rest off to the highest bidders.

Ocean levels are rising around the globe, so rather than tethering our buildings to the sinking shoreline why not suit them for a life at sea? That’s the approach behind the Water-Scraper, a futuristic self-sufficient floating city. A special mention in the eVolo Skyscraper Competition, the design expands the concept of a floating island into a full-fledged underwater skyscraper that harvests renewable energy and grows its own food.
