The glaciers atop Mt. Everest are melting at an unprecedented rate and anthropogenic global warming is likely to blame. The news comes on the heels of reports that CO2 levels have reached their highest in human history, surpassing the 400 parts per million mark, and climate change is shifting the location of the North and South Poles. Researchers from the University of Milan say that ice coverage on top of Earth’s highest mountain has shrunk by 13 percent in the last five decades.

But food security is a serious issue in the 21st century, as countries around the world struggle to produce enough food to feed their growing populations. A new study from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany that was published in the journal Environmental Research Letters suggests that over half of the world’s population could depend on imported foods by 2050.

5.9 isn’t just any number; it’s the magnitude of the devastating earthquake that struck the Italian region of Emilia May 29, 2012. Italian company Budri was one of the companies affected by the quake, and they reacted to the event by creating a series of tables and other decor from their damaged archive of marbles and stones (including onyx, lapis lazuli, amethyst and mother of pearl). The series, aptly dubbed Earthquake 5.9, was recently presented at the 2013 Salone del Mobile.

Polish designer Asia Piaścik‘s Sugarcloud Lamp takes its inspiration from a sweet recipe inspired by traditional Polish crocheting techniques. Here, white cotton is first crocheted and then stiffened with a simple solution made up of water and sugar. The technique dates back to a time when Poles would make crocheted decorations for their Christmas trees, but Piaścik modernizes the method by magnifying her forms. We originally spotted this beautiful design, amongst others, at last month’s Milan Design Week.

Omer Arbel‘s dazzling 38 Collection for Bocci features a series of suspended green lamps that double as planters. The surreal recycled glass spheres are blown with a multitude of cavities. Some spaces are deep enough to house LED lighting elements, some cavities host earth and succulents, and electricity and suspension are provided by a copper tubing system.

Bruno Dussert-Vidalet and Alessandro Dolcetta turn light into emotion with their new lighting company, Blackbody. Presenting for the first time at Euroluce during Milan Design Week earlier this month, Blackbody incorporates works from designers across the globe, including a piece called “Bonzai” designed by Italian architect and designer Aldo Cibic, and “Bell family” designed by French designer Thierry Gaugain. The lamps are designed to be long-lasting (14,000 hours life), ultra flat (2 mm thickness), glare-free, heat-free, and 100% recyclable through the use of luminous OLEDs. More than simple lamps, Blackbody’s multi-faceted forms allow architects and designers to explore innovative and personalized approaches to application.

Three Wise Men are a group of lovely wooden lamps handcrafted into different sizes and shapes. Designed by Hong-Kong-born, UK-based Samuel Chan for his own brand Channel, they give off a warm and focused shine thanks to the use of an E27 LED bulb. The lamps were crafted from solid American white oak and American black walnut and given a slender bottle-like top. The series takes its name from the group of men who (according to the Bible) visited Jesus when he was born—we however spotted them hanging at this year’s Milan Design Week.

Zona Tortona showcases unique, outside-the-box thinking every year during Milan Design Week – and few designers exemplify this better than Italy’s IDI Studio. A keen user of FSC certified wood, this charming design studio showed off several cool interiors at Milan Design Week earlier this month, but we were particularly enamored with the firm’s ROPE ME series, which is made from 100-percent recycled materials.

Lightweight yet exceptionally strong, these Bee Hive Lamps are a series of luminaries inspired in the busy insects’ homes. Created by London-based designer Marc Krusin for Alpac Srl, they’ve been constructed by layering Re-board, a patented, recycled, rigid paperboard manufactured in Sweden. And despite having a hard shell, Krusin’s Bee Hive Lamps give off a warm and inviting glow. Recycled, compostable and brilliant, we originally spotted this sweet lamp hanging at Milan Design Week.

Casamania just unveiled its new metal and wicker Raphia chair, which strikes a balance between modern design and traditional craftsmanship. Designed by Politecnico di Milano industrial design graduates Paolo Lucidi and Luca Pevere (LucidiPevere), Raphia breathes new life into the Italian tradition of natural reed craftsmanship, which has all but disappeared. The design combines industrial metal and traditional wicker, and it’s available in red, azure, black and white.
