The Retyrement Plan is a collection of outdoor weatherproof furniture items created from old, discarded automobile tires and recycled plastics. Anu Tandon Viera creates a woven upholstery of recycled plastic wrapper waste over a 'frame' of tires salvaged from]]> automobile tires, car tyres, recycled plastic, recycled materials, recycled furniture, retyrement project

The Retyrement Plan is a collection of outdoor weatherproof furniture items created from old, discarded automobile tires and recycled plastics. Anu Tandon Viera creates a woven upholstery of recycled plastic wrapper waste over a ‘frame’ of tires salvaged from old scooters to discarded trucks. The “virtually indestructible” ottomans are part of a collection that includes occasional chairs, pouffes, charpais and floor cushions made from well-traveled wheels, salvaged fabrics and reclaimed wood and bamboo.

Tucker Robbins showcased these simple yet beautiful pendant lamps made from repurposed fishing baskets at this year’s ICFF. The woven lamps give new life to disused fishing baskets made by local craftspeople in Sulawesi, Indonesia.  Each natural rattan lampshade can be lined with or without rice paper to give the lamp a brighter or more diffuse glow.

When Inhabitat’s Architecture Editor,  Bridgette Meinhold, heard about the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 and the massive devastation it caused, she wanted to help, and was drawn to start investigating different options for temporary shelters and disaster relief housing. This exploration gradually broadened to a larger focus on design for disaster-preparedness; seeking out what type of shelters can best withstand earthquakes, hurricanes, rising sea levels and tornados. Now I’m thrilled to say that after years of research, Bridgette has just published an incredible new book entitled Urgent Architecture: 40 Sustainable Housing Solutions for a Changing World. Urgent Architecture showcases inspiring and innovative ideas for resilient design – design that will withstand the test of time – surviving climate change, rising sea levels, manmade and natural disasters. I recently had a chance to interview Bridgette about her new book at Inhabitat HQ in NYC, and she gave me some fascinating insight into her inspiration for the book, the impact climate change will have on future housing and what she believes is necessary to create a more sustainable and responsive built landscape. Where most people see packing material to be discarded after use, artist Bradley Hart sees a blank canvas waiting to be filled with pops of color. The New York-based Toronto native has been creating astoundingly realistic portraits of celebrities and friends using bubble wrap injected with paint. Besides people, Hart also has depicted some of his favorite places, like a square in Amsterdam, and brought to life more abstract ideas. The painstaking process involves filling each tiny air-filled bubble with acrylic pigment, making it appear as if the finished product is made up of thousands of pixels. On average, it takes the artist about 150 hours to finish each of his works. But even before he approaches his unusual canvas, Hart spends two-three days loading the paint into the 1,200-1,500 syringes needed to complete a single creation. One of his most famous works to date depicts the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. To complete the incredibly lifelike portrait, Hart injected over 16,000 individual bubbles with 89 different hues of paint to spectacular effect.

The artistic duo has created an art installation underneath a San Antonio overpass called Ballroom Luminoso, which utilizes steel, bicycle parts and LED fixtures to create a brilliant chandelier display right where you would least expect it.

The Gap Filler Pallet Pavilion in Christchurch, New Zealand, was built as a community space following devastating earthquakes. The recycled shipping pallet pavilion is an incredible facility, but unfortunately it was only ever funded for one year. The organizers have now turned to crowd sourcing to secure funding to keep it open for an additional year. In addition to being a stunning piece of shipping pallet architecture, the pavilion has been a positive beacon amongst the rubble. So far we’ve seen many examples of kitchen utensils being repurposed into customized, low-tech and eco-friendly objects – but these gorgeous colander light shades by New York-based designer Nadia Belalia bring a special steampunk sensibility. Inspired by the “abundance and rawness” of industrial material in the New York, she created the series of lighting fixtures which combine the strength of metal with soft oval forms. Belalia’s lamps are currently on display at this year’s ICFF in New York.

Ballroom Luminoso, a new public artwork by Joe O’Connell + Blessing Hancock, was recently installed in a freeway underpass in San Antonio, TX. Composed of six brilliantly lit, color-changing chandeliers, the sculptures are clad in recycled bike parts gleaned from bike co-ops and collectives across the country. Through their use of materials and refined forms, the piece melds grandeur with a sense of neighborhood rejuvenation.
