For his new "Public Room" exhibition, artist Giuseppe Licari transformed the Hommes Gallery in Rotterdam into an indoor park - complete with a large grassy lawn, small trees, and even birds. For his new “Public Room” exhibition, artist Giuseppe Licari transformed the Hommes Gallery in Rotterdam into an indoor park – complete with a large grassy lawn, small trees, and even birds. The installation inverts the common understanding of indoors as private and outdoors as public. People are invited to enter and engage in activities that would normally take place in an outdoor public park. Visitors can lie in the grass, read a book, enjoy an espresso or chill with friends. During the installation, the Hommes Gallery will host a weekly program of events that will explore how urban ecology is associated with the social, cultural and economic tactics of survival within various communities.

In light of all the dire news related to climate change, rising sea levels and the natural disasters which have stricken numerous coastal areas around the world, we here at Inhabitat would like to highlight an interview Inhabitat Editor-in-Chief Jill Fehrenbacher conducted with architect Koen Olthuis of Waterstudio.nl. A studio focused on designing for a future water world, Olthuis has been at the forefront of this once unconventional, yet now timely design vernacular. Olthuis says that despite our civilization’s history of trying to drain and fight against wet landscapes for the past thousand years, our best move for the future would be to “let water in and even make friends with the water.” Read on for the fascinating interview where Olthius describes his what designing for water landscapes worldwide really means.

As the climate changes and sea levels rise, cities that were previously thought to be relatively safe are looking more and more vulnerable — just ask anyone in New York who lived through Hurricane Sandy. Last year, a group of architecture firms united to tackle these issues with innovative green design. Instead of calling for the installation of giant Rotterdam-style floodgates, the designers called for more ”soft infrastructure,” which involves using natural resources like coastal marshlands and building more sustainable infrastructure like green roofs.

The New York Observer recently spoke to Vishaan Chakrabarti, the director of Columbia’s Center for Urban Real Estate and a partner at SHoP architects, who says that building-sized floodgates like the ones that guard areas of Rotterdam from flooding are one answer that could save billions of dollars in damaged property.
