New Yorkers who have been lugging their food scraps to composting centers in the city may be catching a break very soon. New Yorkers who have been lugging their food scraps to composting centers in the city may be catching a break very soon. Mayor Bloomberg is expected to announce shortly a new citywide composting program that could divert 100,000 tons of food scraps from landfills per year. The new system would make it easier for apartment dwellers to separate their organic food scraps from other trash without having to compost it themselves.

A huge two-mile-wide tornado touched down south of Oklahoma City Monday afternoon, devastating a community of 41,000 and killing as many as 51 people. The tornado hit wind speeds of 200mph and scored a preliminary rating of four out of five on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, and eyewitnesses report that its 20 mile journey tossed around cars, crushed homes and ripped apart buildings – including two schools. The tornado is the worst to hit the suburb of Moore since 1999, and officials from the National Weather Service warn that more could be on their way. Local organizations have already set up a range of ways to provide aid to victims of this terrible disaster – hit the jump to find out what you can do to help!

It’s been a bad year for air quality in China. Rampant industrial pollution has caused cities like Beijing and Shanghai to be shrouded in a cloud of toxic emissions, and now China’s most vulnerable citizens are feeling the heath effects of the economic development. As smog across northern China surged to record-breaking levels this winter, many children began to experience unexplained illness and breathing problems. Many mothers now forbid their children to play outside, fearing that the very air will pollute their young lungs even further.

As electric vehicles claim an increasing share of the road, their counterparts in the air are just starting to take off. On March 28, the SportStar EPOS two-seater electric plane made its first 30-minute flight. Czech company Evektor-Aerotechnik designed the aircraft with a single 50-kW Rotex electric motor and a trapezoidal wing span of 10.46 meters. Powered by a 40-Ah battery from Kokam, the SportsStar EPOS can reach up to 260km/h with a cruising speed of 150km/hr.

Act of 2012 signed into law, a whole host of new plans have been set in motion. Along with the support of Mayor Vincent Gray, the legislation has outlined 32 goals, 31 targets, and more than 140 actions to help make Washington DC one of the most environmentally friendly cities in the country. DC already leads the nation on number of LEED buildings per capita; the city also purchases 100 percent renewable energy, and it hosts one of the largest bike share networks in the country. Dubbed Verti-Cult, the system is made from 100% recycled Polyethylene milk and juice bottles collected from local schools in Hsinchu, Taiwan. In additional to providing beautiful ambient lighting, the green walls have the potential to improve air quality and even produce vegetables – just imagine waiting at a bus-stop clad in a Verti-Cult facade!

Eschewing the model of placing homes on stilts, Adeyemi proposes to build a floating community complete with modern sanitation, waste disposal and fresh water facilities for up to 250,000 residents. And since everything starts with a good, solid education, his first project involves building a three story school floated on plastic drums.
