It’s Friday, which means many of us are just counting the minutes until happy hour. After enjoying a bottle of wine, it’s always a bit sad to dump the bottle in the recycling bin. Although there are plenty of upcycling options for wine bottles, many require a fairly large dose of creativity. Protea (PROH-tee-uh) is a new brand of wine that aims to unleash your inner upcycling genius while complementing your favorite dinner. Each Protea bottle is specifically made to be reused – for floral displays, to hold olive oil, or as a beverage container. The possibilities are practically endless!

Handy is a new line of sustainably crafted office accessories by Barcelona-based design studio Lucirmas. The versatile, modular desk set is made from recycled glass and cork. It comprises a pencil and business card holder, a small container with a lid, and a cable holder. Each glass element is entirely handmade by upcycling liquor bottles, and the entire set can be disassembled and recycled at the end of its lifespan.

The term “upcycle” – used to describe the process of turning something old and used into a new and useful item – has rapidly grown in popularity over recent years. The term was popularized by Cradle to Cradle pioneers Michael Braungart and William McDonough, and in their new book The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability — Designing for Abundance they take the concept beyond the simple reuse of materials and propose a world in which everything we do improves the environment. The much-anticipated follow-up to their breakthrough book Cradle to Cradle, The Upcycle will hit the shelves on April 16th, and we got a chance to check the book out ahead of its release – read on for a first look!

The Trash Café is part of the University’s larger "upcycling" initiative which aims to develop an environmental awareness among young designers and motivate them to use sustainable materials. The plastic-bottle chairs and cardboard walls of the cafe will be dismantled and flat-packed at the end of the week to be moved to other locations in Newcastle. Jeffrey Allen Price uses soft, springy sponges to create colorful large-scale geographical maps. His textured works do a surprisingly accurate job at depicting the irregular borders of the states and continents they are meant to represent. As a metaphor for the current moral and political state of the world, the worn-out sponges have a history of cleaning up hundreds of human messes.

Stephen Shaheen creates intriguing designs from discarded remnants of onyx left over from industrial stone fabrication. No stranger to upcycling, Shaheen uses these upcycled materials to create spectacular sculptural furnishings that resemble illuminated stacks in the form of a pyramid. The designs vary depending on the scrap materials Shaheen uses. The inventive Eistla series is crafted from onyx, while his Lou P. chair feature is a work made from 22 layers of Italian botticino marble. But while the materials differ, the central idea of utilizing all the wonderful salvaged remains of beautiful stone blocks remains the same.
