Sexy Hyundai i-oniq Hybrid Concept to Debut at the Geneva Motor Show

Hyundai just gave us a sneak peek of its latest eco concept car, which will be debuting next week at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show [4]. The Hyundai i-oniq concept is a new hybrid [5] coupe that is propelled by a “green” powertrain and has sexy styling that points to the evolution of Hyundai’s design language.

The i-oniq concept was designed at Hyundai’s R&D center in Rüsselsheim, Germany. According to Hyundai [7], the exterior, with its “strong arched curves,” is a preview of the evolution of the automaker’s “fluidic sculpture” design language that is currently used on models like the Hyundai Sonata and Elantra [8].
The four-passenger concept is powered by a 107 horsepower electric motor and a lithium-ion battery [9]. A 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine extends the concept’s driving range, just like the four-cylinder engine in the Chevy Volt [10]. According to Hyundai, the i-oniq concept has an electric-only driving range of 75 miles, but thanks to the gas engine, the concept has a total driving range of 435 miles.
Allan Rushforth, the senior vice president of Hyundai’s European operations stated,“The i-oniq concept has been created to reflect the new thinking that runs through the Hyundai [7] brand. It has a bold design, inside and out, that provokes contemplation on the future of automotive [11] possibilities, and a powertrain that highlights one of the ways in which we could power future products.”
