Worapong Manupipatpong [1] wants to bring out the inner child of visitors to the Bangkok Art and Culture Center. A wizard of timber, the Thai designer constructed a simple indoor treehouse [2] called the Shelter of Nostalgia that allows adults and children alike to nurture their imagination. Part of the Politics of Me [3] exhibition, the shelter will be on display through the end of August.

Of simple timber construction [4], the multi-level Shelter of Nostalgia features three main hideaway spots that are large enough for big and small people. The fundamental idea of the clean, smooth structure, which is wrapped like a vine around a central beam, is to re-create the tendency of small children to seek out small private spaces in which to hatch wild fantasies.

The pitched A-frame mini-rooms [5] are of varying size, allowing for each group sessions or total privacy. It isn’t certain what will become of the shelter once the exhibition comes to a close, but the homogenous and recyclable materials [6] are easily disassembled for re-use elsewhere. How fun. We wouldn’t mind having one of these in our home.
