Shigeru Ban [1] is on a roll these days – the internationally acclaimed architect just added yet another [2] newly finished building to his 2013 roster. Today Ban presided over the official opening of the IE Business School of Madrid [3]’s Paper Pavilion, which is an airy space comprised of 173 sturdy cardboard tubes. The temporary structure will be used to host IE’s executive education events and other activities centered around the school’s core values of innovation and sustainability.

The pavilion is located in the grounds of IE’s Madrid campus and it took just two weeks to construct with the help of students from the IE School of Architecture [4]. The building is only a temporary space, so the school requested that the structure be built using sustainable materials.

The 173 paper tubes employed in the construction are held together by timber joints that rest atop paper columns, and only local labor and materials from the region were used. “I try to use local firms for my work,” said Ban. “In this case the tubes, for example, were made in Zaragoza.” LG was also kind enough to equip the building with its Multi V III heating and air conditioning systems, ensuring a supply of “good air”, a healthy environment, and a reduction in energy consumption.

Speaking about the construction, Santiago Iñiguez, the Dean of the IE Business School and President of IE University said: “IE’s culture and Shigeru Ban [5]’s work share a commitment to sustainability, the humanistic spirit, and the blending of multiple cultures. The pavilion opened here today will serve as a hub for the exchange of ideas in a place that is light, open, elegant, and functional, while its ephemeral nature serves to remind us of the need for the permanent transformation of knowledge.”
