A shimmering design for a mixed-use tower in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is hoping to achieve LEED certification [2] by utilizing an intriguing glazing system that provides both shade and light. Designed by Danish Henning Larsen Architects [3], the Villas in the Sky will be a 29 story tower situated as one of the last buildings in the green thoroughfare, the Wadi.

Energy efficiency plays a strong role in the building with the help of an angled glazing system. Panels angled down towards the street are transparent, letting light in and allowing people inside to see out, while panels angled up are a light-colored cladding and shade the interior form the hot desert sun [5].

The mixed use tower [6] is a basic square shape with a zig-zag facade at the top to differentiate it from the other towers in the area. Retail and commercial space will occupy the bottom three floors with office space programmed for the next 14 and then 22 residential units on the last 12 floors. The Villas are expected to be complete sometime in 2013.
