Pop-up stores are pretty common, but hotels less so, largely because of their need for reliable and consistent infrastructure. The makers of Sleeping Around wanted to apply the same principles of pop-up retail shops and eateries to the hotel business. Shipping containers provide the perfect space in which to make that happen. Their sturdy exterior, closeable doors and accepted transportation capabilities allow them to be moved wherever and whenever. City-sized cranes simple lift them up onto a truck bed and then they are moved to the next location.
Right now the four-bedroom hotel is sitting on the banks of the Schelde canal in the heart of Antwerp near Rijnkaai Number 150. In September of 2012, Sleeping Around was at the TV Show Villa Vanthilt near the Mas in Antwerp and then in October it was in the Exhibition Interior in Kortrijk. Soon the hotel will move on to its next location with new views and new surroundings. Guests of Sleeping Around will enjoy their own room complete with a bathroom, a floating box-spring bed with high quality linens, an XXL Hansgrohe Raindance Shower, and a Dyson air conditioning system. Another container serves as the lounge and breakfast room and soon a 6th container will be the sauna. Rooms start at around €149 a night and the hotel can be booked out for special occasions.
