Exciting news for the Times Square Redevelopment Project [2] has come to light! Norwegian firm, Snøhetta [3] has been awarded the project to redesign a car-free, pedestrian friendly Times Square as well as public spaces on Broadway between 42nd – 47th Streets. We’ve loved the project since its inception and couldn’t be more excited to see what Snøhetta ultimately comes up with for the foot-traffic heavy section of New York. Installation of the “Cool Water, Hot Island” [4] temporary project by Molly Dilworth, which we’ve written about before, is said to happen in July and the permanent makeover will commence in 2012.

Last year, the NYC DOT officially made the zone pedestrian friendly [6] and expedited their plans by painting the streets and adding furniture. This summer, they will add Molly Dilworth’s pour paintings to make it more attractive and also reduce the heat island effect [4]. Now Snøhetta, along with a number of other firms, will design permanent public places along Broadway.

The project team includes WxY architecture + urban design, Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects, BILLINGS JACKSON DESIGN, Leni Schwendinger Light Projects LTD, Pure + Applied, Weidlinger, Buro Happold, BEXEL, Wesler Cohen, and Ducibella Venter and Santore. Craig Dykers, Snøhetta’s co‐founder said [7], “Our goal is to improve the quality and atmosphere of this historic site for tourists and locals, pedestrians and bicyclists, while reducing the traffic impediments so the “center of the universe” will retain its edge while refining its floor.”
