SND CYN Studios: Former Lima Bean Factory Turned into a Collaborative Workspace in Irvine

Lima beans may bring back unpleasant childhood memories, but we think seeing this building, a former lima bean factory, might change your mind. Located in Old Town Irvine, this 125 year-old factory used to handle lima beans, now it houses a load of creative types - like artists, designers, photographers, producers and developers. SND CYN Studios is a collaborative workspace for these artsy folk and an amazing example of an adaptive reuse project with the addition of a lot of great vintage furniture, art and decor.
SND CYN Studios was the brainchild of Ty Mattson, who runs the creative studio Mattson Studios . Wanting an inspiring place to go to work everyday, he set his heart on turning the historic bean factory into his offices. With only a small boutique firm though, he and his staff wouldn’t come close to filling the space, so he asked his friends and other creative folks to join him. Inside, you’ll find a whole slew of experts in almost every art and design field, from photographers to designers, to event planners and web developers. SND CYN Studios took its name from their address on Sand Canyon and just like kids with an aversion to lima beans, they have an aversion to vowels.
Officially, the aesthetic of the collaborative office space is mid-century modern meets vintage industrial. The factory is on the National Register of Historic Places, so the developers couldn’t make any major changes to the interior, which means you’ll find old gears, beams and lima bean-producing paraphernalia right alongside an Eames Chair. The office is a veritable who’s who of the design world, and besides the Eames chairs, you’ll find a Saarinen coffee table, a George Nelson side table, and Alexander Girard dolls. To pay homage to graphic designers, the walls are lined with vintage productions of work that has inspired Mattson, as well as toys, records, skateboards, artwork and models.
Mattson also had help from Camp Design Group in outfitting the interior. They sourced the items off Etsy, Ebay, and other vintage shops and then complimented them with some more contemporary items like the Room & Board desk in Mattson’s own office. The creatively renovated office is an inspiring place that offers up a collaborative environment for a number of companies to work in and feed off the energy of other artistic people.
