Flight pioneer Bertrand Piccard, an aeronaut who made the first nonstop round the world balloon flight, recently unveiled a prototype of an incredible solar-powered airplane that will one day circle the globe. Dubbed the Solar Impulse, the plane first caught our attention when it was being developed, and we’re thrilled to see a working prototype of the vehicle. Is the age of the solar powered airplane upon us?

Great plane, see some nice videos http://www.stichtingmilieunet.nl/andersbekekenblog/?p=412
A solar powered, single place airplane is nice; but, how does it bring anything to the masses? It cannot. No airplane can be constructed large enough to carry sufficient solar cells to do MEANINGFUL work; that is…they cannot carry many passengers or cargo. Airplanes such as the Solar Impulse are merely novelties.
However, true, viable solar flight is coming.
How? On board giant, rigid shelled airships. Only airships have the room needed for immense solar cell arrays which are needed to supply power for real workhorse aircraft.
However, these cannot be “blimps”, or “dirigibles”; but must be constructed in a new, much stronger manner than ever before. WE ARE TOTALLY COMMITTED TO DOING THIS, and have been working towards this for many years.
