By 2011 the city of Wembley will have a spiraling new student housing tower powered by solar panels. Located close to Wembley Stadium, this multi-tiered tower designed by London-based CZWG will contain 435 student rooms. The solar-powered tower is part of a planned redevelopment that will help regenerate and enhance the local urban landscape.

The original plan for the student housing tower was reportedly turned down by the local planning inspectors until adequate changes were made to the design. Now the new design has been accepted and is well received. One of the local inspectors said, “The proposed building is of an outstanding architectural and urban design quality.” The 20-storey tower is comprised of three separate wings surrounding a central tower. Each wing is a different height in order to blend in smoothly to neighboring buildings.

The two south-facing facades will be partially clad in photovoltaic panels that will meet some of the on-site power demand, although we don’t know how much it will be yet. Windows are set in a diagonal pattern and are recessed to increase their visual scale and depth. The student housing tower will also feature a large front lobby and entrance, a launderette, management offices and lots of bike parking. Two landscape areas will provide students and local residents a place to gather and sit outdoors.
