SOMA Architects’ recently broke ground on their new Shaza Hotel project in Doha, Qatar, with the goal of opening its doors in early 2016. In their plans for this iconic hotel, the architects came up with a design that offers luxury accommodation and entertainment—all located within walking distance of major tourist attractions, such as the famed Museum of Islamic Art, the Qatar National Museum and Souq Waqif.
The hotel will have 180 rooms spread across 15 floors, three basements, ballrooms, spas, a business center, restaurants and cigar lounges. A celebrity-run restaurant will boast innovative dining concepts brought into the country and inspired by the cuisines of Silk Route.
Its sleek, glass facade references local tradition and has an Arabesque pattern silk screened onto the glass and parametrically manipulated to create a translucent mashrabiya. The facade is meant to maintain optimal conditions in the interior, while withstanding sand storms and temperatures over 115 degrees F, which are common in the Qatari capital.
