Originally formed as part of the CREATE festival 2011 and the latest commission in UP Projects’ Portavilion program, the floating cinema is a public art project that meanders down London’s waterways. At 2 meters wide and 16 meters long, it has two enclosed cabins and a 4 meter long glass-fronted interior. 3.5 meters of the boat is open, providing spill out space for various functions.
Twelve flip up seats with upholstered covers that keep bums comfortable even during long journeys are designed to either face each other or forward towards the screen. They stash away when the space needs to be cleared. Smocked black out curtains give the interior a touch of glam, and they too fold back when not in use. So far 60 filmmakers have been featured on the boat’s little screen and 75,000 people have been inspired to pay it a visit!
