It’s not often that we get to talk about airports but there is a lot happening in the aviation industry. One landmark development is the proposed construction of a new terminal at Shenzen Bao’an International Airport in China. Positioned as a gateway to China and designed by architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, the terminal will no doubt be a sleek transit destination. What has captured our attention is the incredible double skin canopy intended to let patterned natural light into the space, and significantly reduce energy consumption.

Another testament to OUTRAGEOUS EGO ! Such an incredibly STUPID design ! HOW DO YOU CLEAN IT ! HUH !!!??? What complete idiocy ! hasn’t anyone learned the lessons of the I.M.Pei ‘Javits Center’ fiasco yet ???? The damn place can’t have it’s windows cleaned… and this place is 100 time WORSE as far as cleaning goes !
Why doesn’t China hire 4th graders to design their big public works projects ? That would at least be an improvement over their current trend of hiring 1st graders to design them !!!
earthsmile,
The building, like the National Aquatics Center in Beijing, is coated in an ETFE variant. ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) a self cleaning membrane, it has a very low friction coefficient so any time it rains, dirt and residue literally fall off the building. It also helps reduce a buildings electricity and water usage consumption by up to 40%. All in all I think it is an organic yet modern and thoroughly enviro-friendly design.
Not bad for a bunch of 1st graders.
