A British electric sports car [1]‘ has just completed an epic journey, travelling from the outskirts of the Arctic Circle all the way to the bottom tip of South America. And if you’re trying to calculate what that distance is in your head, this stellar EV has covered a staggering 16,156 miles (26,000 km) of road in just 70 days.

The undertaking, known as the Racing Green Endurance Challenge [2], was completed by the British team in their 400bhp twin-motor SRZero sportscar [2]. The EV is fully electric and powered by lithium-ion batteries [3], giving the vehicle enough juice to drive more than 250 miles on a single charge. The car also boasts a top speed of 124 mph and can reach 60 mph in just seven seconds.

The SRZero electric sportscar was developed by a team from the Imperial College London [4] in collaboration with Radical Sportscars [5] - a partnership that was established August 2009. The project took two years of careful planning by The Racing Green Endurance Project team at the London Imperial College, and Dr David Howey told the media that “there was a lot of scepticism, so we’re all very pleased that the cynics will now have to eat their words”.

The cost of the trip was reportedly £750,000, but the group saved a fortune on petrol, making the full distance on just £3 a charge. The team started their epic journey in Alaska back in July, where geothermal energy [6] provided the initial charge, furthermore demonstrating the potential of emission-free transport. The team reported that finding places to charge the car was the biggest challenges over their multi-continental journey. On top of that, the car was subjected to a multitude of temperatures and road surfaces over the 70 day challenge.

The SZero’s itinerary included drives through the US, Mexico, Central America and finally into South America where it arrived at the world’s most southerly city, Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, just yesterday afternoon.

Despite their incredible achievement, on behalf of the team, mechanical engineer and team member Alex Schey posted this simple statement on their blog [2]: “We were received in an absolutely fantastic style as we arrived into the world’s southernmost city, and the whole day from start to finish has been spectacular.”
