Stadium du Littoral is a Spectacular Net Zero Sports Complex in France

Located in Grande Synthe in the north of France, the Stadium du Littoral is a tour de force when it comes to sports. The 12 hectare site has three rugby fields, two football fields, an archery round, a running track, a 1300 m cycling ring and soon it will have a BMX track. The stadium itself is a long and low volume with a roof that spans an open central void. Contained within are two clubhouses, locker rooms, community recreation room, administrative offices and seating for 617 spectators. A bridge spans from the stadium across the cycling track letting fans travel to a communal viewing terrace without interrupting the race below.
Parts of the stadium are covered with a micro-perforated fabric that provides shade and protection from the elements, but still gives the feeling of being outdoors. The textile also filters sunlight to protect interior rooms from solar gain, providing thermal control.
The roof holds 700 square meters of photovoltaic panels that generate electricity for the stadium, and excess is sent to the local electric grid. A solar hot water system provides up to 50% of the facilities hot water and rainwater is collected from the roof to provide water for flushing toilets. A wind turbine is expected to be installed soon, and when it finally happens the facility will be able to generate more power than it needs.
Recently completed in September, Stadium du Littoral is a multi-sport complex dedicated to rugby, football, archery, running, cycling and BMX. The arena is composed of flexible spectator and sporting areas, as well as all the necessary administration and athletic facilities.
