Last year we showed you how photographer Steve Axford explored the fantastic micro world of fungi through a macro lens. Today, we have a bunch of stunning new images we couldn't stand to not share. The curious photographer spends his life taking captivating images of rare fungi he finds deep in the Northern Rivers area of Australia where he lives, and sometimes finds his subjects right at the back of his own garden.
Steve Axford’s photographs are a beautiful, reminding the viewer that nothing exists in isolation and the closer you look, the more you find. And what Axford found is an astonishing collection of rare fungi spotted in remote locations around the world, but particularly Australia’s Northern Rivers area, where he resides. By taking a closer look through his macro lens, he was able to unveil the magical, almost hidden world of fungi.
His ‘recyclers‘ collection reveals intricate details, amazing shapes, sizes, textures and colors, showing how diverse and beautiful they are. Some glow in the dark, so open up like fans, some are solitary and some of them can sprout suddenly during the night. If you loved the images on the gallery, you can see more of Axford’s discoveries on his Flickr and SmugMug account.
