The Houston Museum of Fine Arts has just chosen Steven Holl Architects to design a new building for their expansive institution. One of our longtime favorite firms in sustainable design and recent winner of the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal, Holl and Co. will certainly produce an eco-savvy and innovative addition to the museum. With buildings already designed by iconic artists Isamu NoguchiMies van der Rohe, and Rafael Moneo, the museum’s newest structure is certainly in good company.

Details of the new building are scarce, but it will house mostly art from after 1900 that’s part of the museum’s permanent collection. Covering two acres of land that is currently a parking lot, the design will also make room for extra galleries for traveling exhibitions, educational rooms, a library, lecture halls, a theater, and a restaurant. Not unlike many of Holl’s creations around the world, the structure will meld flawlessly into its surrounding environment, including nearby buildings. The new addition is said to be inspired by the museum’s Audrey Jones Beck and Caroline Wiess Law buildings, both with their linear glass and concrete facades that capture natural light and maximum use of space. We can’t wait for the renderings to be revealed!
