StitchWorks is bringing together the non-profit design office GA Collaborative [2], Tiny Showcase Print Shop & Gallery [3] along with 14 emerging visual artists together to create a series of fabric and print designs inspired by the work of the Rwandan women’s Association Dushyigikirane. Tiny Showcase has printed and released the fabric series over the last three months and are currently on display at their gallery. The StitchWorks project raises funds for housing and community buildings in Masoro, Rwanda, home to the association. Proceeds from the sale of each 12” x 12” print (available for purchase on their website) will be used to build housing prototypes and provide design and construction education for the Masoro association and community.

The StitchWorks project is organized by GA Collaborative, a 501(c)3 non-profit comprised of designers and educators. Since 2008, GA Collaborative has been working with the Association Dushyigikirane to design and construct 50+ houses for their impoverished and predominantly single-parent families. After the 1994 Rwandan genocide, a collective of women, many of whom widowed from the conflict formed the Association with the mission to support and empower women. With over 600 members today, Dushyigikirane provides a social and economic framework for their community through job creation and technical skills and education.

Today, Dushyigikirane is working towards their most essential goal of providing basic shelter for its members. For GA Collaborative, achieving this goal begins with the construction of housing prototypes. The process provides the opportunity to research efficient construction methods and to create precedents to teach basic techniques in design and construction to the Masoro community. The StitchWorks project is one way for the arts and design community to contribute to the FUND-A-HOUSE fundraising project.
