Studio Meda [4] recently won first place in The Architecture Foundation [5]‘s international competition to design an improved bike storage shed for London’s Bankside district [6]. In an effort to improve the city’s lack of secure bike parking and storage [7], Studio Meda unveiled an elegant and equally practical bike shed that provides a variety of different security features for overnight and long-term parking.
Studio Meda’s versatile winning design includes horizontal railings for better parking support as well as optional storage lockers. The architects also stated that the design utilizes a “flexible kit of parts” that can be tailored to the unique requirements of a specific building site. These building components were created with easy transportation and construction in mind, and they are lightweight and can be easily disassembled for future re-use [9].
Despite stiff competition from the other shortlisted architects, the versatility and streamlined aesthetic of Studio Meda’s design made it a clear winner for the up and coming London district. The first prototype should be completed this May, and we look forward to seeing its implementation for bicycle commuters in Bankside.
