Tropical Storm Irene battered the New York area on Sunday morning, leaving the regional transportation systems crippled and thousands without power. Both of New York’s major airports were still closed on Sunday afternoon, and a combination of flooding, downed wires and fallen trees prevented the New York transit system from resuming operations. Although the storm wasn’t as destructive as initially feared, it did cause major flooding in the New York area, and it left officials scrambling to try to get the subway system up and running in time for work Monday.
