Gallery: SunVolt Power Station Can Charge Gadgets as Fast as a Wall Out...

SunVolt Portable Power Station in its Carrying Bag

It’s easy to get worked up about portable solar chargers. Yes, it’s awesome to make your own clean energy, and it’s wonderful not to be tethered to an outlet every time your phone needs a boost of juice. But what many solar charger manufacturers don’t tell you is that their devices need anywhere from 6 – 12 hours in direct sunlight before their internal batteries are fully charged, and it may take another six hours for them to transfer that power to your device. Bummer. Unless you’re using the SunVolt portable power station, that is.

Tired of solar chargers that took too long to be useful, Don Cayelli decided to design one without the pesky middle man of an internal battery. The result is the SunVolt: a portable charging platform that will efficiently convert the sun’s rays into powerful charging current for your mobile electronic devices. Cayelli claims that when exposed to direct sunlight, “a SunVolt Solar Power Station can charge multiple devices with the same speed as if they were plugged in and charged from the wall.” The powerful Monocrystalline photovoltaic panels are housed in a compact, lightweight carrying case, so they can go wherever you do.

Want to try it out for yourself? The SunVolt is currently about 1/3 of the way to a $30,000 fundraising goal on Kickstarter. An $85 pledge will ensure you have one of the first models to hit the market.
