London design firm Priestmangoode recently unveiled the Mercury, a high speed train designed for low-carbon ultra-efficient travel. The Mercury is a double-decker train with a sleek body and unique interior design that intends to revolutionize domestic rail travel. Although only a concept at this point, the train is designed to achieve a blazing speed of 225 mph.
Priestmangoode is attempting to bring back the age of iconic British design with their Mercury train. In years past, Britain was known for transportation designs like the Concorde, the Spitfire, Rolls Royce and the Routemaster bus. The London design firm hopes that with the design of the new Mercury high speed train, they can put Britain back on the map as a global leader in design and technology.
The Mercury features an extended nose section that is vital to the aerodynamics of the train, allowing it to attain speeds of 225 mph. The train also includes a very inviting, bright and comfortable interior. The top deck has windows that curve up onto the roof allowing for views of the landscape as the train races down the tracks. The 400 meter-long train also includes some private berths for families or private parties that include bars, work areas, and couches. Even a child’s play area will be integrated into the train, along with a luxurious first class section for those who want to travel in style. As Priestmangoode says, in order to persuade people to travel by train more, train travel needs to be as exciting as air travel and as sexy as the latest supercars.
