It’s officially New York Fashion Week [2] here in New York City, and despite the glum economic outlook, there are some definite bright spots shimmering on the streets of the recession-battered Big Apple. Inhabitat is joining the brigade for ‘runway optimism’ [3] by highlighting NYC-based eco fashion talent and innovative designers. We are genuinely inspired by the sustainable style [4] efforts of several fashion houses slated for stardom in 2009. We view fashion week as an opportunity to further examine clothing and the vital role it plays in our lives, not only as an expression of individuality, but as a shelter that sustains us. What better opportunity to support designers who create socially and environmentally responsible garments, than by doing your consumer homework during fashion week hype. With this in mind, we are kicking off our fashion week coverage with a sneak preview of Sublet Clothing [5]’s playful and smart, eco-chic Spring 2009 collection.

With the tagline, “and they say you can’t meet anyone online”, we were intrigued to see how Sublet Clothing [5]’s founders have weathered the storm of economic downtown by investing in a friendship that started via an online roommate query while in college. Inessah and Tara of NYC-based Sublet joined forces as a creative duo determined to make sustainable style accessible and ready-to-wear for all. With a growing fan base of Alicia Silverstone, Miranda July, and Summer Rayne Oakes [6], Sublet Clothing has collected a following of women who are wise about the key fashion items that they select and invest in each season.

There is no doubt that we will all be maximizing on what we already have in our closets as we look ahead to shedding a few layers for the warmer weather to come, and Sublet Clothing [5]’s designs are great investments with their timeless flirty and chic tailoring. All of Sublet’s garments are made out of a blend of 30% bamboo, 67% organic cotton, and 3% spandex.

For Spring 2009 they have continued with their alliterative girlfriend naming-scheme creating cute separates like the ‘Catherine dress’, the ‘Courtney top’, and the ‘Caitlin dress’. Their Greek-goddess inspired ‘Alison dress’ [7] was a super hot item during 2008, and there is no doubt that the Catherine Dress will be a green girl favorite for this season. Inessah and Tara are also excited by the new directions that they are taking for Fall 2009 with an expansion into eco-inspired wovens as well as a new website launch planned for this month.

Even if you do not make it to Bryant Park or a sleek Chelsea gallery during NY fashion week, rest assured that some of the best eco fashion out there right now is totally grassroots, taking root online, and spreading seeds of sustainable style far beyond the velvet ropes and invite-only protocol of the industry.
