Sweden Announces BPA Ban in Children’s Food Packaging
Posted By Mark Boyer On April 29, 2012 @ 1:03 pm In Inhabitots | 1 Comment
Just one month after the FDA rejected [5] a proposal to ban Bisphenol A [6] (BPA) in food packaging, Sweden has announced that it will ban the chemical in food packaging intended for children under 3 years old. BPA is a powerful hormone disrupter that is used in plastics and aluminum can linings. Government officials in Sweden say that this new chemical ban will mostly affect lids of baby food bottles but the new mandate also gives the Swedish Chemicals Agency a 3-month deadline to decide if BPA should also be banned from certain types of thermal paper, including receipts and tickets, and to determine how BPA is being used in drinking-water pipes, toys and children’s goods.
