Hotel Furillen is a wonderful green retreat set within a restored limestone refinery on the northeastern coast of Gotland, Sweden. Created by photographer Johan Hellström and wife Anna-Karin, the green hotel stands out amidst the brutal yet gorgeous Nordic coastline. Located in a 2.5-mile-long quarry, the hotel offers luxurious accommodations that draw inspiration from the old refinery and its rugged surroundings.
Set in an almost lunar landscape, Hotel Furillen looks more like an abandoned factory than an eco-luxe hotel. The mix of top Nordic brands with soft luxurious interiors creates a high-class retreat amidst the wild coastline.
Hellström’s decoration themes for this fantastic adaptive reuse hotel were “concrete luxury” and factory-chic. Alvar Aalto glassware and Bang & Olufsen electronics fill the spaces with top-quality Nordic designs. During the warmer days of the year, visitors can enjoy the magnificent surroundings relaxing in the forest or riding one of the hotel’s free bikes.
And if you’ve had enough with the city and prefer to get away from concrete shelters, there is a cool silver Airstream caravan that will provide an extra note of adventure to your nights.
