Gallery: Swirling LED Lights Kick Off the Holiday Season in the Streets...

Madrid's holiday season recently got a colorful start thanks to a wonderful new lighting installation by Italian designer Teresa Sapey. Commissioned by the city as part of an annual tradition to brighten up Madrid's streets during the winter holidays, Sapey devised rows of circular LED lights in every color imaginable that warm up a relatively featureless part of the Spanish capital.

Several celebrated artists and other creatives will brighten up Madrid’s festive season this year, but Sapey was responsible for transforming Serrano Street – one of the city’s lease charismatic areas lined with a series of upmarket, high-fashion shops. Only a lot of color and funky shapes could turn the place into a festive holiday district, the designer decided.

Much less energy intensive than other lighting options, Sapey’s LED rope lights are formed in giant circles that are white, blue, purple and several other colors. No two circles are alike and the picture they create are visible on both sides. The designer specifically chose the LED option in order to lessen the project’s environmental impact while maximizing its holiday spirit.
