One luxury we all have today, which future generations may not, is the privilege of being surrounded by trees. Artist Konstantin Dimopoulos is asking us all to take notice by painting city trees bright blue. Sydney’s trees are next, which will hopefully stop people in their tracks and serve as a reminder of our responsibility to the planet.

Dimopoulos has visited several cities, including the Houston trees captured in the video, to spread the message of social awareness which he holds dear. He says, “I have always known that art is and has always has been an extended part of nature and that art can effect social change.” Dimopoulos hopes to encourage people to educate themselves on the devastating effects of deforestation and the “ecocide” of our surrounding natural world, yet in a way that inspires social connection instead of fear.

This week Sydney was taken over by volunteers brushing local trees a bright, head-turning blue. The artist uses water-based paints so it will safely wash away after the next rain. Visitors can observe the installation throughout the end of this week at Pirrama Park, Pyrmont. Follow Dimopoulos’ work to see where the blue trees will pop up next.
