This year at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, something menacing was lurking among the tables and chairs. D-torso brought a giant 3D T-Rex made completely from cardboard. Standing a bit taller than an average human, the sculpture dominated the exhibit. Using laser-cut technology to bring the dino to life, the sculpture appeared as a mesh between the modern and the prehistoric.

Organovo Holdings, a San Diego, CA-based manufacturer of 3-dimensional human tissues, recently announced a partnership with 3D-software company Autodesk Inc. to develop the first 3D design software for bioprinting. The new software will be used to control Organovo’s NovoGen MMX Bioprinter, which produces “living human tissues that are three-dimensional, architecturally correct, and made entirely of living human cells,” according to the firm.

Amy Prieto, a chemistry professor at Colorado State University, started a company that is created a three-dimensional battery with a core of copper foam. Although it’s still in the very beginning stages of development, this incredibly smart technology could lead to batteries that contain two times more energy and charge in five minutes flat.

Geneticist J. Craig Venter told attendees at the recent Wired Health Conference in New York City that his scientific team is working on what he calls “a 3D printer for DNA, a 3D printer for life.” Such a device—which Venter also refers to as a “biological teleporter”—could be used to instantly produce vaccines, medications or biological materials anywhere in the world simply through the transfer of a digital file.

The art of origami is serious business, especially when involves folding over 49,000 business cards as part of a three-dimensional representation of an enormously complex mathematical object. On September 20, USC Libraries unveiled an enormously intricate model of a newly discovered fractal called the Mosely Snowflake Sponge, designed by MIT-trained engineer Jeannine Mosely. At an enormous six feet tall, the thousands of cards making up the Sponge have been fashioned into cubes and paneled with USC’s red and gold school colors. This marks the first time that this object has been represented into the real world as an actual physical piece.

Last month a low-flying airplane airplane equipped with a laser embarked upon two weeks of stealth missions over New York City. Not your average covert operation, these 9 six-hour flights were made in the name of green — as part of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s PlaNYC program, the flight crew was quietly making a 3D solar map of the entire city. The information is currently being digitized and will be used to figure out what buildings are suited for solar power, what neighborhoods need more green space, and who has been leaving their lights on. Well, we’re just joking about the lights.
