O+A's temporary stage was made using repurposed containers as building blocks. It lasted only two weeks but it provoked long-lasting impressions due to its overwhelming scale. Sadly, the elements have a way of destroying the best finds before hunters have a chance to give them a once over. In an effort to protect curbside donations and inspire altruistic behavior, Dutch designers Waarmakers have created the Goedzak, a special bag designed especially for giveaways. Partially transparent and clad in fluorescent yellow, the flexible garbage bag sets goods apart from other landfill waste.

Shipping containers offer a surprisingly versatile foundation for small-scale, sturdy homes – they’re readily available, relatively inexpensive, and easy to retrofit. Now the UK is planning to capitalize on cargotecture by transforming recycled shipping containers from Amsterdam into housing to help fight homelessness. The southern coastal regions of Brighton and Hove have seen a growing incidence of homelessness due to skyrocketing rent and housing prices, so the Brighton Housing Trust and developer QED have requested funding to turn 36 shipping containers from Amsterdam into temporary housing for their communities.

The New York Observer recently spoke to Vishaan Chakrabarti, the director of Columbia’s Center for Urban Real Estate and a partner at SHoP architects, who says that building-sized floodgates like the ones that guard areas of Rotterdam from flooding are one answer that could save billions of dollars in damaged property.
