A couple of Finnish artists embarked on a project to create a poetic public art installation called Bird Hangar that uses the wind to spread seeds across Japan. Unveiled at a past edition of the Yokohama Triennial, Casagrande & Rintala‘s sculptural cone was built with a steel frame and wrapped in a biodegradable, fast-growing hemp rope. The idea at the heart of the project consists of releasing meteorological balloons with attached balsa wood birds that contain five seeds of basic Japanese vegetables, ready to be distributed across the country.

The Houston Museum of Fine Arts has just chosen Steven Holl Architects to design a new building for their expansive institution. One of our longtime favorite firms in sustainable design and recent winner of the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal, Holl and Co. will certainly produce an eco-savvy and innovative addition to the museum. With buildings already designed by iconic artists Isamu Noguchi, Mies van der Rohe, and Rafael Moneo, the museum’s newest structure is certainly in good company.

Matthias Pliessnig‘s beautiful organic benches strike a perfect balance between the the subjects he studied: sculpture, furniture design, and wood & art. The Philadelphia-based designer creates these astonishing sculptural seats by shaping ash and white oak strips with a low-energy, ancient technique called steam bending. Originally used for building bows and boats, steam bending works by shaping wood with heated vapor – allowing designers to create curvaceous structures like these dynamic furniture pieces.

Technology’s fast pace has left in its path mountains of electronic waste, but it has also given way to a new medium for eco-designers to work with. Made from unloved CDs, qwerty keyboards, multi-colored cables and motherboards suspended in an admittedly not-so-eco epoxy resin environment, these trashy looking seats by Chilean Rodrigo Alonso. turn all that e-waste into technology’s time capsule. Dubbed N+ew — which stands for No More Electronic Waste — these limited edition seats stand out in a big way.

Instead of using oil or watercolors to make paintings, artist Rashad Alakbarov uses light, shadows and found objects to create amazing city landscapes on walls. The Azerbaijan-based artist’s mixed-media installations include pieces entitled “Looking at two cities from one point of view”, “Plastik portret” and “Crisis haha”. Alakbarov carefully positions multicolored acrylic planes, packaging materials, and other objects of assorted shapes and then projects light upon then to create shadow images of beautiful beaches, cities, people, and even words.

There is a certain etheral winding line that often surfaces in artist Andy Goldsworthy‘s work – If you’ve ever seen the documentary “Rivers and Tides,” visited the de Young Museum in San Francisco, or watched a snake move through the grass, you know the line. Last year this familiar form surfaced again in San Francisco as Goldsworthy created “Wood Line” – a winding trail of fallen Eucalyptus trees that gracefully curves through the forests of the Presidio.

Brazilian architect Carlos Teixeira created an incredible labyrinth made entirely from layered recycled cardboard for the 29th International Biennial in Sao Paulo. Shaped like a gigantic maze and featuring curved and straight walls, dead-ends, and U-shaped ramps, the installation was designed to host small events during the Biennale’s short duration. Entitled ‘The Other, the Same’ (‘El Otro, el Mismo’) this sustainable temporary installation takes its name from a 1964 book by renowned Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges.

New York-based architect Allison Patrick set herself the goal of creating 30 DIY designs in 30 weeks, and she called it the 30x30x3 Project.
