Vasileios Roumeliotis transformed an old bike tire into this beautiful Wheel Light for Roumelight. This lamp is made from a recycled bicycle wheel set on a black glass surface which acts as a canvas, showcasing the play of light and shadow. The Wheel Light can be illuminated by a striking circle of 18 dimmable bulbs (G4) or a hidden length of perimetric LED tape that gives off soft ambient light. The lighted wheel represents both a green method of transportation and an enlightened forward movement full of inventive ideas and creativity.

Inspired by a thriving demographic in Vancouver, Mobiel is a multifunctional cart designed to support the day-to-day needs of commercial urban farmers – people who grow food on a medium to large scale on urban land to sell it to markets, restaurants and other businesses. Beginning with the basic features of a wheelbarrow, this cart has the added benefit of organized tool storage, and it can be easily attached onto the back of a bicycle to carry goods from the farm to the market or from one plot to another. Mobiel carries on the narrative of city farming through its unique functionality and its distinctive character.

Hot on the heels of the launch of New York City’s new bike-sharing program, Chicago officials announced this weekend that the Windy City will kick off a bike-sharing program of its own by the end of June. The program, known as “Divvy,” will ultimately include 4,000 bikes that will be parked at 400 solar-powered hubs spread throughout downtown Chicago and the surrounding neighborhoods. At an event this weekend, transportation officials showed off the three-speed Divvy bikes, which will be painted light blue and feature upright handlebars.

The BKR is a concept bicycle by Pietro Russomanno with a sturdy, malleable, and elastic wood frame. The bike’s skeleton is crafted from plywood with inert rubber gaskets sandwiched in for effect. The cycle features an innovative ‘Easy Saddle’ system that allows the rider to change the height of the seat by simply pushing a button. A specifically designed dynamo on the front wheel generates energy and transmits speed/distance information directly to a Smartphone dock on the handlebars.

Ever wonder how hard you are cranking it on your bike? Matt Richardson knows exactly how fast he is going with his Raspberry Pi Dynamic Headlight that projects his speed in front of him. His prototype takes advantage of a sensor located on the wheel, Raspberry pie mounted on a balsa board hanging from the frame, and a projector clamped onto the handlebars. A USB charger powers the Raspberry Pi and the headlight. Richardson plans on adding some new visualizations to his next model, and possibly GPS capabilities. Just be careful to focus more on traffic than your personal best in a time trial!

Dominican designer Richard Moreta Castillo has proposed an innovative solution for cyclists stuck in congested cities packed with cars – a 10 kilometer elevated bike path that lets bike riders soar through the sky! The Bicimetro Eco Bahn is composed of two glass and steel tubes held up by a series of futuristic supports. The tunnels protect cyclists from road hazards like potholes, car doors, and vehicles and they’re topped with energy-generating wind turbines and photovoltaic panels.

Josh Zisson set out to design the safest bike on the road – and the key to safety in traffic is visibility. In addition to a dynamo-powered lighting system, the bike is coated with a patented retro-reflective powder coat that’s by a company called Halo Coatings. When headlights hit it, the entire bike glows bright white. The coating is cheap, extremely durable, environmentally-friendly, and much cheaper than existing reflective technologies. Josh is holding a contest to name his bike next week, and the grand prize winner gets a hand-built wheelset, featuring Halo’s reflective coating.

Have you ever been freaked out riding your bike at night, surrounded by automobiles piloted by distracted drivers? Well, here’s an innovation for safer night-cycling that might be hitting the market soon (and reducing your level of stress). A team of designers has won an industrial design award for their Bike Zone invention, which creates a lighted safety zone on the ground around your bike, alerting drivers to your presence at night. The laser-projected zone extends for a meter on each side and also projects an animated directional signal. Frank Guo, Hung Wang, and Stuart Morrow, a team of independent designers, received a Bronze award for the Bike Zone design in the 2012 Lite-On Awards, a competition sponsored by Taiwan’s $16 billion Lite-On Technology Corporation.

How can you carry a toolbox and a workspace on the luggage carrier of a bike? That’s the question Berto Aussems was confronted with when he sought to take his work as an electronics repairer on the road. In the past he kept a toolbox in the trunk of his car, but then he came up with a more environmentally friendly solution – a DIY mobile toolbox and workbench that folds up to fit on a bike rack! The portable workbench is able to transport all the tools needed for light repairs using only a bike, and the toolbox top folds out with the help of a piano hinge and a few brackets. The workbench is removable from the bike rack and is able to stand on its own (stowable) legs made of aluminum tubes. Even though the portable workbench only weighs about 10kg, it’s able to support Aussem’s body weight. It’s a wonderful addition to any maker’s bicycle and a great solution to work on projects in the field. You can find a complete, step-by-step, project plan over at Instructables.

A dual purpose bicycle (DPB) is a bicycle which can be used for both transportation and for power production. The modification consists of a free wheel, a bottom bracket and a “V” pulley. The DPB can power a rice thresher, a peanut sheller, a circular saw, a wooden lathe, a piston pump and many other implements that require rotary motion.

The result is a sleek, refined fixed-gear road bicycle that blends Thonet‘s classic bentwood curves with London-based architect Andy Martin‘s design prowess. The frame is composed of beech wood that has been steamed and bent, using the same processes developed back in the 1930′s to make Thonet’s chairs. Combining complex engineering with a modern, simple aesthetic, the Thonet Bike will be available in a limited edition run priced at £43,000 a piece.

If you’ve ever been freaked out over the dangers of riding your bicycle at night, the Xfire Bike Lane Safety Light might be able to offer you a little more security. This battery-powered safety light clamps to your bike frame and projects highly visible red laser images on the ground on either side of your bike, simulating an instant bike lane that helps alert drivers to your presence. Xfire says the intense laser markers are visible over a mile away, even under headlights and streetlights.
