Once a year, the whole world looks to the Nobel Center in Stockholm, Sweden to announce the Nobel Prizes. The center recently announced plans to relocate to a new building, and out of 140 architects, 12 have been selected to compete to design the new home of the Nobel Foundation and its related cultural and educational activities. Notable designers include OMA, Herzog & de Meuron, BIG, and David Chipperfield Architects. The majority of the selected applicants were from Europe and Scandinavia, with only SANAA’s Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa chosen from outside the region.

Danish architect Bjarke Ingels is known for designing modern, unconventional buildings, so it comes as a bit of a surprise to learn that Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has been selected to redesign the historic Smithsonian campus in Washington, DC. BIG will lead a design team that will include Surface Design, Traceries and Robert Silman Associates, which will be tasked with re-imagining the world’s largest museum and research complex. BIG won’t be designing any new buildings—at least for the time being—so we don’t expect any mountain-shaped forms to spring up on the National Mall, but the question of how, exactly, BIG will rethink the historic campus is still open.

Designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group, the heart hovers within a cube made of 400 glass rods, and it pulses brighter and stronger as more visitors touch the activation pad. More people bring more love and more light, making the sculpture directly relate to the crowds surrounding it, so grab your sweetie, your friends, or even a few strangers, and help light up Times Square. Bjarke Ingels loves to ski, so there’s no doubt he’s thrilled that his firm, BIG, just won first prize to design the renovation and expansion of the Kimball Art Center in Park City, UT. BIG’s winning design features a soaring, twisting, timber eco-tower that pays respect to the mining history of the Utah ski town. Using reclaimed trestlewood for the structure along with other sustainable strategies like solar power, rainwater collection, a high performing thermal envelope and daylighting, BIG’s tower is sure to make a huge statement. The Danish firm best be on the lookout for office space in Park City so they can get to work on the new and improved art center.
