Luxury bicycle manufacturer M55 just tipped the scales of wretched excess by releasing its new Terminus Royal and Terminus Prime line of e-bikes, which can be blinged out with Swarovski crystals, diamonds, and gold. The Royal line comes studded with gems and precious metals, and the ‘no-limit’ Prime line can be decked out with practically anything you can imagine. The company is marketing its cycles to VIP e-bike loving customers — starting at $37,600 — but we can’t help but think about the wasted resources going into blinging-out these Terminus electric bikes. No matter how many zero-emissions miles you might ride on these two-wheeled vehicles, you’ll never make up for the resources that went into mining the precious materials that make these bikes sparkle.

88bikes just announced their sixth project, dubbed Asha 2012, an initiative to give thousands of bikes to young girls from Eastern Europe to Southeast Asia who have been victims of slavery, abuse and in some cases, the sex trade. This project, their most ambitious one yet, was inspired by a 2010 endowment of bikes to every girl living in a remote ashram in Bihar, India where survivors of sexual slavery are brought after they are rescued or have escaped to be sheltered for several months before being reintegrated back into their communities. In the developing world a bicycle can open up doors for a young person, as it provides the freedom of self reliant, sustainable transportation so they can take their life into their own hands and as 88bikes explains it, become their own hero. For a young girl, a bicycle can tip the scales of gender inequality and give them a firm footing for a healthy and peaceful future.

Panasonic’s Evolta robot recently proved that powerful technology can come in a pint-sized package as it completed a 230 kilometer (142.9 mile) triathlon in Hawaii. The active little robot has previously scaled the Grand Canyon and completed a 500 km trek from Tokyo to Kyoto. The triathlon was its toughest challenge yet, and he finished with an impressive time of 166 hours — quite an accomplishment considering his size.

Ron Arad has a history of bending steel to fit his needs – in 1986 he did it for a chair and now he’s gone even further and bent sheets of steel into such a tizzy they now forms two functional bike tires. The bike was designed specifically for W Hotels and was just revealed at an event in London. For the next two weeks guests at the W Hotel in London can take the flowery prototype for a spin. Soon, as part of a fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, this bike will be auctioned off to one lucky cyclist along with other custom designed and constructed “WOW bikes”.

Arlington County and MetroBike are currently in the process of scaling up the area’s bike share service by doubling the amount of stations, but instead of figuring it out themselves, they’re asking the public where the new racks should go. In an innovative and very participatory new program, the county is receiving public comments from residents and businesses on the new station locations. Rather than simply install the new racks and then advertise the service to prospective city cyclists, an interactive map has been released that locals can use to make suggestions.

Just last week a team of inspiring designers began to ride their hand-built bamboo bikes across America to share the story of the Alabamboo initiative. Alabamboo is a collaborative effort by non-profits and businesses that recently shot up to bring sustainable bamboo production to Alabama. Centered in Greensboro, Alabama, home of Rural Studio, one of the initiative’s many branches is the Alabamboo Bike Lab. Inspired by Brooklyn’s Bamboo Bike Studio, the lab works fast-growing bamboo into stylish, sustainable and sturdy rides. It simultaneously brings clean, affordable transportation and green employment opportunities to the rural area’s low-income population.

A group of five students from the University of Pennsylvania have quite possibly created the world’s most technologically advanced bicycle. Over the course of a year, this genius crew engineered and fabricated the Alpha bike, including all of its integrated electronic systems. The resulting design may look quite similar to market available high performance cycles, but hidden within the extra-strength frame, there is actually an internalized three-speed drive train, braking system, and high-tech electronics powered entirely by the bike’s motion.

Who hasn’t fantasized about being able to fly above the clouds? While human beings have come up with ways to mimic the feeling, here’s an option for those of us who are, frankly, a little too wussy to try out base jumping or hang-gliding right off the bat. Created by Dr. Carsten Mehring, the Streetflyer is a human-powered, light-weight carbon-fiber vehicle that allows you to get a running start and then simply put your legs up to get you into a horizontal hang-gliding position using a body-harness. You won’t be more than 3 feet above the ground, but you can imagine how freeing it will feel to “soar” through the streets in the Superman position (though you may not look as cool as you feel). The concept vehicle could also be used for rehabilitation purposes since it allows the user to be in a suspended vertical position while propelling themselves forward with no impact to their limbs.

Would you ride your bike more often if it looked like a horse? That’s the idea behind “Horsey”, a set of wooden accessories you can attach to your bicycle to make it look like a pet horse, and therefore encourage people to bike more often instead of driving. Designed by Eungi Kim, the novel idea was one of the shortlisted entries in Designboom‘s Seoul Cycle Design Competition 2010. “I wanted to give a special look to bicycles so that people would care about cycling not only as transportation but also as a lovely pet,” said Kim of her design. We’re not quite sure that people would ride their bikes more if they were “horseyed” out, but it sure would attract attention to your wheels in the streets!

E-Bicycle manufacturer M55 Bikes have just unveiled their latest hybrid electric bicycle, dubbed The Beast. While most electric bicycles made are designed to help their riders get up steep hills, The Beast’s unique “pedelec” system enables the e-bike to obtain a top speed of 40 mph. With a hybrid system that allows the user to pedal, as well as use the on board battery to power the electric motor, The Beast can go as far as 75 miles on a single charge.

Here at Inhabitat we love bikes that boast the latest and greatest high-tech materials, but we’re equally impressed by more organic takes on two-wheeled transportation. Combining both of these approaches, Schwinn recently rolled out the Vestige, the world’s first bike built from biodegradable flax fibers. The sturdy flax-framed bike performs similarly to carbon fiber cycles, although the Vestige’s carbon footprint is much lower and it’s actually better at absorbing and dampening road vibrations. The bike also features a snazzy internal lighting system that is powered by a dynamo in the front hub, making it a battery-free eco ride that lights up the night.
