Greek yogurt is delicious, high in protein, and a good alternative to sugary snacks. However the $2 billion dollar a year industry has a dark side that comes in the form of toxic acid whey. It takes three to four ounces of milk to create yogurt and the rest becomes a runny, hazardous byproduct that cannot be released back into the environment. As it decomposes, acid whey depletes oxygen from streams and rivers, killing wildlife and creating “dead zones” over large areas.

Two supermarkets are making lemonade out of lemons the green way—by converting their spoiled food into energy. Grocery chains Ralphs and Food 4 Less (both part of the Kroger Co.) have joined forces with FEED Resource Recovery to make use of the rotten and expired foods that their markets don’t sell. Any food that can’t be sold or donated will be transformed into energy to help run their distribution center in Compton.

Where there are million of animals, there are millions of tons of waste. In a clever solution to a major waste disposal problem, Australian researchers have found a way to convert 1.4 million tons of Chinese pig excrement into fertilizer and a source of alternative energy. The project, which is operated by the Adelaide, Australia Cooperate Research Centre For Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment (CRC CARE), has won a national science award for its solution for pig waste in China.

Today FuelCell Energy, Inc. announced the dedication and operation of the world’s largest carbon neutral fuel cell power plant – a 2.8 megawatt DFC3000 stationary fuel cell power plant installation at a water treatment facility in California. The plant’s unique on-site fuel cell application converts biogas, a harmful greenhouse gas, into electricity and usable high-quality heat in a carbon-neutral fashion that emits virtually no pollutants.

eBay recently announced that it’ll be teaming up with Bloom Energy as part of its “bold new vision for powering commerce with clean energy.” The online retail giant announced that it will be powering its flagship data center in Utah using a Bloom Energy fuel cell farm as its primary power source. eBay obviously needs a lot of energy to power its vast number of servers, so the fact that they are turning to a greener option than the predominately fossil fuel-powered electrical grid is a testament to how far clean energy has come.

Rwanda’s jails are reducing their energy bills this year by turning inmates’ waste into energy. That’s right, poo power is back, and now 75 percent of the prisons’ energy is fueled by a mixture of human and animal sewage in an effort to make the country’s 14 prisons more sustainable. Biogas burners have been installed, and they are run by the facilities’ constant source of waste matter.

Chicken manure is becoming a renewable energy source of choice for many countries. We previously reported that the Netherlands were planning to use the waste product to power over 9,000 homes, and now the UK is also planning a similar venture in the Cotswolds region. The plan is to convert a local Alfagy biogas station so that it uses agricultural waste, such as feedstock waste and manure, to create electricity.

Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calculated that the total energy spent nationwide to supply drinking water and process waste-water releases 116 billion pounds of carbon dioxide annually — approximately the same quantity of emissions as 10 million cars. In Washington, a brand new LEED Platinum-aspiring water education center has opened next to the city’s sewage treatment plant. Designed by the award-winning architectural firm, The Miller Hull Partnership, the project features a green roof, exhibit halls, classrooms, and an ornamental pond and fountain fed by reclaimed water from the treatment plant.

Successfully combining old and new, Deve Architects plan to transform the city’s aging industrial buildings into a new downtown area that celebrates the country’s modern yacht culture. The new plans call for ground-source heat pumps, wind turbines, and biogas as well as solar arrays and kinetic plates to generate energy.

While you may not naturally associate pig feces with ‘clean’ energy, the Lapa Rios Ecolodge in Costa Rica manages to makes pig poo power seem smart, sexy and super sustainable with their environmentally friendly resort. Started by John and Karen Lewis as nature reserve, the Lapa Rios Ecolodge utlizes green construction, helps protect local wildlife, supports a local elementary school, uses solar power for electricity, recycles all of its own waste, and powers its kitchen entirely through pig power. But less you think this sounds like some tie-dyed hippie commune – take a look at the photos. The lodge is as beautiful and relaxing as any five star hotel, and probably a lot more enjoyable to anyone with a sense of adventure or imagination.
