eBay recently announced that it’ll be teaming up with Bloom Energy as part of its “bold new vision for powering commerce with clean energy.” The online retail giant announced that it will be powering its flagship data center in Utah using a Bloom Energy fuel cell farm as its primary power source. eBay obviously needs a lot of energy to power its vast number of servers, so the fact that they are turning to a greener option than the predominately fossil fuel-powered electrical grid is a testament to how far clean energy has come.

Apple recently announced that they are planning to build a massive solar array at their data center in Maiden, North Carolina that will be complemented by a pretty sizable fuel cell installation. According to Katie Fehrenbacher over at GigaOm, Bloom Energy — a Sunnyvale, California-based renewable energy company — is rumored to be behind the 5 megawatt, biogas-fueled energy project. Bloom markets their solid oxide fuel cells as affordable clean energy solutions, and it seems that Apple is catching onto the technology and wants to put it to use.

No matter how innovative a new technology is, it’s worthless unless people and companies make use of it in the real world, right? Well, that’s why we were excited to hear that one of the world’s largest companies, AT&T, will be installing Bloom Boxes (which, if you can remember back to February of last year, are those energy-efficient fuel cells being touted as “miracle micro power plants”) at 11 of their sites in California. While companies like Adobe have already adopted the use of Bloom Boxes, AT&T will be the first telecommunications company to power their operations using Bloom Energy Servers, a move that will hopefully get their competitors jumping on the bandwagon too.

Health care organization Kaiser Permanente has partnered with Bloom Energy to put fuel-cell generators at seven facilities in California by the end of the year. In total, the cells will deploy four megawatts of solid oxide fuel-cell generated power. The agreement expands upon Kaiser’s solid commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development. The company already powers its Santa Clara Medical Center with solar power and uses solar panels in another 15 facilities. The addition of fuel cells is expected to reduce the use of fossil fuels for electricity at the new locations by 34 percent.

Adobe, the company behind Flash Player and Adobe Reader, has always been a supporter of renewable energy – remember when they installed a wind farm at their headquarters in San Jose? Well now they’ve taken another huge sustainable step by installing a dozen 100kw Bloom Energy Servers (aka ‘Bloom boxes’) to handle up to one-third of the entire electricity consumption of the their headquarters, which includes three high-rises and a parking structure.

The news wires are buzzing today with hype surrounding the Bloom Box, a “revolutionary” micro power plant that is purported to produce a steady supply of clean, cheap, and efficient energy. The box is set to be officially unveiled this Wednesday, so details are scant and skepticism reigns, however the company has already garnered an impressive roster of clients including Google, Wal-Mart, Staples, and eBay (who purchased five boxes nine months ago and claims they are producing 100KW – enough energy to fuel 15% of their operations). Each box is about as large as a refrigerator, takes one day to produce, and uses a chemical process that combines oxygen and fuel to generate enough energy for 100 homes.
