The Census Bureau just released a report on the commuting behavior of Americans in 2009. The commuting report is part of the American Community Survey, and it details the average commute time for Americans along with their mode of transportation. Although seven-tenths of Americans living in metro areas reside within 3/4 of a mile of public transit, only 4.9 percent of workers regularly took mass transit to work in 2009. Nine of the ten cities on this list have less than 15% of the population commuting on mass transit. If those are our highest statistics, perhaps Americans need a bit of a mass transit education along with additional infrastructure support.

Boston’s new bike-share program, dubbed the Hubway, officially launched yesterday with over 600 bicycles geared up and ready to rent. For those unfamiliar with the city’s narrow and winding roads, it has long been derided as one of the least bikeable cities. However, the popular support behind Hubway signals a great change. Boston is now striving to be a center of public bike travel in the Northeast. To celebrate the launch of the system and demonstrate how easy, inexpensive and green biking can be, Hubway members rode 200 of the bikes around the city!

ResilienCity seeks to set the vision for the future of Boston’s Innovation District, a new neighborhood built on brownfield sites that will provide residences and workplaces for over 300,000 people. map-lab’s design proposal incorporates a strategy of new canals that gives 100 acres of land back to the sea and provides for roof gardens and living walls throughout the district with the goal of re-establishing long lost ecological conditions.

Halted in November 2008, mid-construction, the Filene development in downtown Boston is currently barely even a shell of a building. The bones of the building are up, but sub street level a giant hole leaves a gouge in the city’s plan. Undaunted, Höweler + Yoon Architecture and Squared Design Lab teamed up to design a vertical tower of prefabricated “eco pods” filled with bio-fuel producing algae for the space. The new tower would act as a center to test new algae species and different growing methods.

We recently showcased Mario Caceres and Christian Canonico’s TREEPODS concept, which sought to sow hundreds of air-cleaning artificial trees through the streets of Boston. Designer Anthony DiMari has conceived of another impressive entry – a piezoelectric field of artificial trees that is able to collect rainwater and generate electricity. Dubbed URBAN FIELD, the project is a finalist in the SHIFTboston contest to create a synthetic tree that yields all the benefits of Mother Nature without requiring water and soil.

Trees naturally filter and clean our air, but in today’s heavily polluted world, it’s just too huge of a task to expect Mother Nature to take care of herself. Taking this into account, designers Mario Caceres and Cristian Canonico have designed a set of beautiful air-filtering trees for the SHIFTboston urban intervention contest. Called TREEPODS, the designs harnesses biomimicry to efficiently emulate the carbon filtration qualities of trees.

Rafael Viñoly Architects was recently selected as the designer of the United States Senate’s Edward M. Kennedy Institute. The new institute will be located adjacent to the existing John F. Kennedy Library and will be designed as a compliment to the famed library. The expansive block building is set to host a series of educational programs focused on bringing public awareness to the history and activities of the United States Senate. Still in their early planning stages, the world-renowned architecture firm recently released preliminary details of the construction, which underscored a design set on achieving LEED certification.

Get ready Boston, someday you might just have this incredible floating city within a city located in your harbor. The BoA, short for Boston Arcology, is a sustainable mega structure designed by Kevin Schopfer, who also designed the amazing New Orleans Arcology Habitat (NOAH). The BoA will house 15,000 people in hotels, offices, retail spaces, museums, condominiums, and even a new city hall. Built to LEED standards with golden proportions, this amazing building would serve as an expansion of the city without impacting what is already currently built.

When we first heard about Puma City, the tri-level, 11,000-square-foot retail store and event space made of 24 refurbished shipping containers, we were intrigued by the popular sportswear brand’s pre-fab initiative. The portable Puma Store, which was designed by our favorite shipping container architects LOT-EK, makes clever re-use of discarded shipping containers and has been traveling around the world as a spokes-structure for both Puma and prefabricated buildings. So when we heard that the lego-esque stack, which was recently named best retail store by Travel + Leisure, would be making a stop in nearby Boston, we had to go see it in action!

What if the White House, the ultimate architectural symbol of political power, were to be designed today? Over two hundred years ago the winning design of an 18th century architecture competition became the residence of the president of the United States at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. To mark the election of the 44th president of the US, Storefront for Art and Architecture, in association with Control Group, has opened White House Redux, a challenge to design a new residence for the world’s most powerful individual.
