One Angel Square is the largest commercial building in Manchester, England – and it is now the highest scoring BREEAM Outstanding building in the United Kingdom. Designed by 3DReid, One Angel Square will be the new 500,000 square-foot home for the UK’s largest mutual retailer, The Co-Operative Group.  This new £100 million low-energy, highly sustainable headquarters will house the 3,500 employees of The Co-Operative Group. As it has just been completed, the project represents a tremendous opportunity for the citizens of Manchester see what sustainable building can achieve.

The University of East Anglia in Norwich, England will soon be home to one of the greenest buildings ever created in the United Kingdom. The new £8M Norwich Research Park (NRP) Enterprise Centre will serve as a gateway for the university and will house offices, classrooms, meeting areas, and a large lecture hall. The NRP Enterprise Centre will aim to achieve BREEAM Outstanding and Passivhaus Certification, which means that the low-carbon building will need very little energy and will be constructed using a range of sustainable building strategies.

Scotland has a long history of whisky production and now the industry is brewing up a green future as drinks giant Diageo recently unveiled their £40 million environmentally friendly Roseisle Distillery in Elgin. As the first distillery to be built in Scotland in 30 years, this innovative project designed by Austin-Smith: Lord Architects combines modern environmental technologies with traditional distilling techniques. The building has been a awarded a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ award, so we can certainly say ‘Slange Var’ to that! (Scottish dialect for cheers!)

The International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, will soon have a permanent new home close to the North Sea. Danish firm Schmidt Hammer and Lassen won the rights to design the new building, which will be built to be environmentally sustainable as well as sensitive to the bordering natural environment. The new International Criminal Court (ICC) will be a striking building meant to convey eminence and authority as well as trust and hope.

Balancing the harsh conditions of Jakarta, Indonesia, is quite a challenge – the area faces high pollution, high humidity, and heavy rains more than 60% of the year. HOK recently unveiled a stunning design for the region’s new British Embassy, situated on a 1.5 hectare site in the center of the city. HOK chose to use locally sourced black granite and metal cladding for the cantilevered canopy, stating that more porous materials would have eventually discolored due to pollution. The black diamond takes into account its surrounding environment as well as the area’s seismic activity, qualifying it for an “Excellent” rating under the BREEAM system (one of the world’s most widely used environmental assessment methods for architecture).
