The Building Baskets exhibition during the London Design Festival showcased a two-year design collaboration between the Design and Business Schools at Kingston University and the Lupane Women’s Center – a basket weaving enterprise that uses craft to empower women. The students worked with 26 highly skilled craftswomen, who used the students’ projects as a starting point and were then given time and space in a workshop environment to explore their own ideas, creativity and identity. The resulting prototypes make up the exhibition.

Folkform has created a colorful line of limited edition cabinets that combine Masonite produced in 1929 (when hardboard was first produced on a large scale) with the final few sheets produced by Sweden’s last Masonite manufacturer in 2011 (before the machines were shipped off to Thailand). Dubbed Masonite:Memoriam, the collection designed exclusively for Swedish brand Svenskt Tenn captures both the newness and the oldness of this material.

Cashmere brand Oyuna worked with designer Peter Marigold to create an interpretation of the traditional Mongolian ger tent-house (or yurt) in an installation for the new exhibition space located at 4 Cromwell Place. The construction, fitted within a grand, double-fronted house opposite the V&A Museum, was part of renowned curator Jane Withers’ show for London’s Design Festival.

Food and furniture were the order of the day at the exhibitions in the Brompton Design District at this year’s London Design Week. Offering a wonderful array of delicious treats and a handful of delectable design products, Brompton didn’t fail to cook up a five-star feast for the eyes, which included an amazing mushroom installation at Super Natural complimented by FoodMarketo’s freshly brewed coffee themed work. But it wasn’t all about treats and eats, there was also more than a handful of green furniture pieces on show that caught our eye, including in the Craft Council’s ‘Chairs and Tables’ exhibition and the ‘13 Chairs’ show at Mint.
