Following in the footsteps of the world’s first cloned village, a Chinese developer has announced plans to build yet another copy of the historic Alpine town of Hallstatt to offer an idyllic rural retreat for those looking for a quick, convenient escape from China’s polluted urban centers. However this latest resort will go one step further to replicate the Austrian countryside – it will be housed within an extraordinary 11,880-foot-high geodesic dome that will provide visitors with ‘freshly’ imported Alpine air.

Buckminster-Fuller‘s ground-breaking geodesic domes might have been technologically revolutionary and highly efficient, but that doesn’t mean that it’s easy to find a roofer to maintain them. For that reason—and several others—a developer is not only trying to get rid of his Bucky-inspired dome, he’s offering a whopping $100,000 bonus to anyone who will take it off his hands. The Gold Dome, once a branch of Citizen’s State Bank on Route 66 in Oklahoma City, was recently purchased by David Box who has found $2.5 million worth of problems with the building—leading him to offer up the distinctive dome to anyone who will take it.

Earlier this year we reported on the opening of the stunning Salvador Dalí Museum located in St. Petersburg, Florida. The museum is home to the world’s largest collection of Dalí works, and since its debut this past April, the dazzling venue has already welcomed over 300,000 visitors. With its clean minimalist lines juxtaposed against a sparkling geodesic glass atrium, the spectacular structure designed by HOK stands as a work of art in its own right, while still paying homage to the spirit of Salvador Dalí. The building also brings more to the table than just its looks. Housing over 2,000 pieces of Dalí’s most important works, the museum is sited within a corner of the country that often finds itself battered by severe storms with catastrophic results. To prepare for the worst, HOK designed the shell of the structure to withstand a Category 5 hurricane. The design also features numerous green systems, including a solar hot water powered dehumidification system, high efficiency HVAC and ventilation systems, and strategic daylighting to illuminate the interiors. We recently sat down with principal architect and Senior Vice President of HOK Yann Weymouth who enlightened us on the intricacies of the design, and what it took to get the museum built. Jump ahead for our exclusive interview with Yann as he explains the design, and how his team of architects and engineers used Building Information Modeling to build a space that’s not only beautiful and sustainable, but disaster-proof.

Richard Buckminster Fuller is considered by some to be the grandfather of the American green movement – an avid inventor and professor, “Bucky” is credited as the first designer to introduce the geodesic dome to the American landscape. Fuller’s own dome-shaped house in Illinois is an educational tool that students have enjoyed for years, however it has experienced its fair share of wear and tear after decades of use and it’s in need of a renovation. Thankfully, the Fuller building has just won the Save America’s Treasure Federal Matching Grant of $125,000, which will go towards its restoration. Built from orange umbrellas in a very Buckminster-Fullery formation, the bar existed for one short evening, dispensing drinks and DJ downbeats.

We’re big fans of Buckminster Fuller‘s legacy of uber-efficient domes here at Inhabitat, so imagine our excitement when we heard that 12-year old whiz kid Max Wallack recently developed a sturdy geodesic shelter made entirely from recycled materials. Composed from discarded plastic, wire, and packing peanuts, the easy-to-assemble homeless shelter is lightweight, insulating, and recently took first place in PBS Design Squad‘s Trash to Treasure competition.

The design community has a valuable new resource with the recent launch of Mtrl - an industry initiative aimed at providing designers with “material about materials.”

The brainchild of ASM International, the Materials Information Society, Mtrl debuted earlier this month with designer workshops in Boston and Chicago. Additional workshops are planned for the fall and in the coming months Mtrl will launch a searchable materials database on their website along with other valuable resources for designers.

Sunday night we attended the Mobile Living event, which proved to be a smashing example of a well-conceived hybrid exhibition. The theme “mobile living” took a comprehensive view, including not just mobile homes, but cars (of which there were two new models on the floor), furnishings, and supposedly even apparel, though we didn’t see it.
