Who doesn’t love a quiet country escape after a long week in the urban mix? Surrounded by nature and stunning views, one lucky family in Washington has found itself with a stylish escape they’ve named the Vashon Island Cabin. An eye-catching, modern three-bedroom waterfront retreat, this cabin was carefully designed by Vandeventer + Carlander Architects to include an innovative layout atop a compact 172 m2 lot. The new building features extensive windows throughout which not only allow for great views of the Puget Sounds, but also make the most of natural light and passive solar heating.

Part cabin, part garden shed, Walden is a prefab living station for outdoor enthusiasts with tons of hidden surprises tucked away into secret compartments. For those who enjoy being outside in their garden, this might be the perfect escape.

Holyoke Cabin is an excellent example of an elegant, efficient use of shipping containers to create a cozy cabin off the grid. Two used shipping containers, obtained for $800 apiece, serve as the starting point for this quaint prefab residence located outside of Duluth, Minnesota.

For those who prefer a little more accommodations and accoutrements, the Clara Cabin from hiveMODULAR is a perfect solution. You get all the comforts of cabin life – a bed, reprieve from the bugs, and weather – while still being able to connect to the surrounding nature. Designed and built by hiveMODULAR partner Bryan Meyer and his wife, Anne Ryan, this little woodland getaway is a great example of how versatility makes small spaces livable.
